What's different about laying polyurea

Preparation doesn't change — every floor gets diamond ground, repaired, flaked to refusal and topcoated. These three things change because the resin is polyurea.

It sets fast, so the crew works fast

Polyurea gives a much shorter working window than epoxy. That means we work the floor in tighter sections and keep moving — flake goes into the base while it's still open, not at a leisurely pace. It's a harder install to do well, and it's the reason the prep has to be completely finished before any resin comes out.

Being Straight With You

When epoxy is the better call

Polyurea costs more. That doesn't automatically make it the right answer for your floor.

On a sound interior slab that doesn't catch much direct sun, full-flake epoxy will often give you a thicker build for less money — $5–$7 per square foot against $6–$9.

We install both, so there's nothing in it for us either way. If your slab doesn't need what polyurea does better, we'll tell you that at the quote rather than sell you the pricier system.

Looking After It

Living with a polyurea floor

Mostly it looks after itself. Here's the year, roughly, from the floor's point of view.

Through the winter

Road salt, brine and de-icer sit on the topcoat instead of soaking into the concrete. Rinse or mop it off when it builds up — warm water and a soft-bristle broom is enough, and there's no urgency to it because nothing is being absorbed.

Through the rest of the year

Sweep or blow it out and mop as needed. The surface is seamless, so there's nowhere for dirt to lodge and no grout lines to scrub.

In direct sun

Nothing special required. The polyaspartic topcoat is UV stable, so the strip by the door holds its color rather than ambering the way an epoxy topcoat can over years.

Under equipment

Flexible doesn't mean soft. It handles vehicle weight and daily use, but it's still worth putting something under jack stands and avoiding dragging bare steel edges across it.

The exact walk-on and park-on times for your floor come at the final walkthrough — polyurea returns to service faster than epoxy, but the temperature on the day still moves it, so we'd rather give you real numbers than a rule of thumb.

Straight answers

What is the difference between polyurea and polyaspartic?

Polyaspartic is a type of polyurea — the terms get used almost interchangeably in floor coatings. In a full-flake system, the base coat is a polyurea and the clear protective topcoat is typically a polyaspartic. What matters practically is the behaviour: fast cure, flexibility, and UV stability.

How much does a polyurea garage floor cost in Wisconsin?

Full-flake polyurea runs $6–$9 per square foot with all preparation included — diamond grinding, crack and spall repair, control joint work and cleanup are inside that number. For a typical 2-car garage of about 500 square feet, that's roughly $3,000–$4,500 depending on the condition of the slab.

Is polyurea better than epoxy?

Not universally, and we won't pretend otherwise — we install both. Polyurea cures faster, flexes with a moving slab and holds its color in sunlight. Epoxy builds thicker, bonds hard, and costs less at $5–$7 per square foot. Which one belongs on your floor comes from the condition of your concrete and how you use the space.

Does polyurea handle road salt and freeze-thaw?

That's much of the reason we install it here. The clear topcoat takes the road salt, de-icers and meltwater, and the flexibility in the system means it moves with a slab through freeze-thaw cycles rather than cracking as the concrete works.

Can polyurea be installed in cold weather?

It tolerates cooler conditions better than epoxy, which widens the window for getting a floor done outside the warm months — useful in an unheated garage or an outbuilding. There are still limits, and they depend on the temperature of the slab rather than the air, so it's something we check on site rather than promise in advance. If conditions aren't right we'll tell you and reschedule instead of putting a floor down that won't cure properly.

Will a polyurea floor scratch or scuff?

Any floor will mark if you work it hard enough. What the flake profile does is hide the everyday stuff — the texture breaks up light so scuffs don't read the way they would on a smooth, glossy surface. For heavier use we can spec the build accordingly; tell us what's rolling across it at the quote.
